Sitting between the fibrous pericardium and serous pericardium is the pericardial cavity. Contained in the pericardial cavity is pericardial fluid, which plays the role of lubricating the surfaces and allowing the heart to move freely throughout contraction.

The Wall of the Heart

The wall of the heart is made up of three separate layers:

The Epicardium: the outer layer, which consists of squamous epithelial cells that overlay the connective tissue.

The Myocardium: the middle layer, which makes up the majority of the wall of the heart. It contains striated muscle fibers that can produce heart contractions.

The Endocardium: the inner layer, which is made up of endothelial tissue, blood vessels, and smooth muscle.
